BMW’s 3-series range is next in line to get the carmaker’s Efficient Dynamics fuel saving technology, and preliminary tests are showing that some models are reducing carbon emissions by up to 23%. The first cars equipped with the system will appear in showrooms from September, and will include the engine stop-start and brake-energy regeneration systems.

The range topping diesel powerplant, BMW’s new 204hp 2.0L twin-turbo diesel will be capable of achieving a mileage rate of 54.3mpg and will produce on average just 138g of CO2 per km. Better still, fuel consumption improves by between 16% and 19% on all 3-series models fitted with Efficient Dynamics technology, reports BusinessCar.

The most efficient model in the range, the 318d scored an impressive 60.1mpg fuel economy rating and emitted only 123g/km of CO2 in its latest European Union test cycle. These figures are comparable with those of the highly acclaimed Toyota Prius and some would argue is actually better than the consumption figures of the popular electric-hybrid.

Nissan today announced the pricing for the 2007 Nissan NISMO 350Z. With a MSRP of $38.070, the 350 Nismo will be available for sale starting July. The 2007 Nismo features an extensively developed list of unique equipment - including a special aerodynamics package and improved handling equipment.

Starting today Audi will offer two new interior colors for its TT Coupe and Roadster models. Priced at £1,750 for 2.0 TFSI versions, and at £1,200 for 3.2 quattros, it adds striking bi-colour Fine Nappa Leather upholstery and extended leather trim taking in the instrument panel cover, door armrest and the sides of the centre console.

The black leather seat edging contrasts with centre sections and door panels in a choice of either silver, crimson red, signal orange or saddle brown, and these are colour matched with stitching and piping for the hand brake handle, steering wheel rim, gear lever gaiter and floor mats. Audi exclusive line scuff plates are also part of the package.

Thousands of new car owners were asked to choose the most satisfying sports car in the United States, and the result was: the Porsche Boxster was ranked No. 1. Boxster owners rated their cars highly within the Power/Acceleration and Braking categories, as well as the Cargo/Space/Capacity, Cupholders and Interior Storage areas of the survey.

"Sports cars are supposed to be exhilarating to drive, but sometimes difficult to live with," noted George Peterson, president of AutoPacific in the Company’s release on Tuesday. "Owners of the Porsche Boxster indicate it delivers on exhilarating, but it is not difficult to live with."

Porsche Boxster is powered by a 2.7-litre flat-six engine with an output of 240 hp. Performance on the road has improved compared to the old model, the Boxster now requiring a mere 6.2 seconds for the standard sprint from 0 – 60 mph and achieving a top speed of 159 mph.

In a previous interview, Phil Popham the Managing Director of Land Rover said “We are keeping the Range Rover offering fresh with regular changes: some are major, like the TDV8 engine last year which, incidentally, will now be badge on the back of the vehicle while others are about the detail, such as those coming in 2008.” And one of those new models is a 2-door SUV.

The new 2-door Range Rover will be the first 2-door luxury SUV available on the US market.

The first 2-door (3, if we consider the "third door" being a horizontally split tailgate) range Rover was unveiled in 1970 when the company introduced the first generation Range Rover. It was powered by a 3.5 L aluminum Rover V8 engine.

After almost 40 years, Land Rover wants to turn back history with the introduction of a new 2-door model. It will be powered by a range of vehicles including the normally aspirated V8 and advanced turbodiesel V6 used in the 4-door version of the Range Rover Sport.

The top of the range will be powered by a 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine with an output of 390 hp and a peak torque of 410 lbs-ft. Other options will be: a 300 hp 4.4-litre normally aspirated V8 and the advanced new 2.7-litre 190 bhp turbodiesel V6. The top model will make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 7.5 seconds and will have a top speed of 150 mph.

The new 2-door model will feature the same Dynamic Response suspension system first used in the 4-door Range Rover Sport. This system will help the SUV to have an excellent on-road dynamics because it senses cornering forces and acts to optimize body control and handling. It also decouples off-road to allow greater wheel articulation during tough all-terrain driving.

The 2008 2-doors SUV features will be the same as for the 2008 4-door model: a of four-zone air conditioning complemented with ’climate control’ windscreen and side glass available in conjunction with automatic rain and headlight sensing, redesigned rear seat that will provide extra storage space.

With hybrids all the rage, and Ford needing good news, the company has now mixed two favorites of the alternative fuels folks and announced an experimental production run of E85 ethanol fueled hybrids.

It’s an idea whose time has already passed.

Twenty Escape ethanol hybrids will be delivered to select customers in six states. The move was praised by the Governor of Nebraska, speaking for the Governors Ethanol Coalition.

However, people who are not governors in corn-producing states are increasingly critical of ethanol in automobile fuels. Congress set mandates for ethanol use in automobile fuels, but there is now substantial political demand for caps on the amount of ethanol that can be devoted to fuel purposes.

The artificial demand for corn which the government mandates created raised corn prices world wide. Apart from increasing domestic food costs, some critics have claimed that the effect has been most severe on the poor in impoverished foreign countries. Meantime, ethanol shortages earlier this year contributed to a significant increase in ethanol’s price, in turn contributing about ten cents a gallon toward increased gasoline prices in the United States. Ironically, though the ethanol mandates had been promoted as a way of reducing reliance on foreign energy, the domestic ethanol shortages resulting from the increased ethanol demand created by the mandates forced oil companies to import ethanol from abroad to meet the requirements.

E85, in particular, because burning ethanol does not create the same level of energy as burning the same amount of gasoline, a vehicle must burn significantly more E85 than gasoline to travel the same distance. (That is, a car gets worse mileage on E85 than gasoline.) The experimental Escapes have larger fuel pumps, larger fuel injectors, and bigger fuel lines to compensate for the larger fuel flow keep an E85 vehicle’s performance at a level comparable to one which is gasoline powered.

Chances are, however, that you won’t be seeing the Escape E85 ethanol hybrid in showrooms very soon. Though ethanol is being blended with gasoline, only those vehicles specifically designed to run on E85 can use it a fuel without engine damage. So far, less than one percent of service stations sell E85.

Wonder if one of those Escape E85 Hybrids will end up in the Governor’s garage in Lincoln, Nebraska?

Even if the BMW X6’s production will begin in 2008 there are no informations about the shape of this new crossover. All is know for sure about this new model is that the X6 will have to be a Crossover with the typical shapes of one coupe. And as Infomotori thinks, it will have the design inspired by the latest CS Concept.

The X6 will have a sporty design: a combination between sport and practical. The X6 will combine the look of a Coupe sports car with the dynamics of a SUV.

The X6 will be powered by the strongest engines from X3 and X5. Diesel engines will be same as in the X3: 3,0-Liter-Twin-Turbo with 286 HP. The petrol engines will be: a twin-turbo 3.0L delivering 300hp and later 4.8L V8 with 367hp. The X6 will make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 6.8 seconds. A M-version of the X6 is not planned however, since all wheel and SUV models apply with BMW as incompatible with M-philosophy.

The X6 will be officially unveiled in September at Frankfurt Motor Show.

After the CLR 600 and the CLR 500 RS based on the BMW M5, Lumma is now working on the M3 E92. Even if you can only speculate about the new model from Lumma, the images tell everything: this car will look amazing!

The front apron will be changed with enormous air intakes, the rear flap with integrated spoiler. Under the hood we will probably see a V8 engine with 420 hp.

Hyundai is expected to introduce a hybrid version of the Avante, the vehicle sold in the United States as the Elantra, for the home market – i.e., Korea in 2009. Instead of gasoline, the vehicle will be set up to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electric motors. LPG costs half the price of gasoline in Korea and there is a deliver infrastructure already in place for it.

Hyundai is moving now to capitalize on Korean incentives for hybrid vehicles, fearing that delay would cede market share to Japanese manufacturers who have a head start in hybrid production. It will need changes in Korean legislation to complete the move, because LPG powered vehicles are currently legal in that country only for rental cars. However, government approval is anticipated.

The automaker estimates a fuel economy range between 44 and 47 miles per gallon for the hybrid vehicle.

Though Hyundai has said nothing about selling a hybrid in the United States, it also plans a gasoline electric hybrid for 2010 and there would appear to be no reason that a gasoline powered version of the hybrid vehicle could not be sold in the United States.

It was previously known that the CL-Class was design with a reinforced chassis that would allow the production of a convertible on the same platform with only minor adjustments. It is believed that such a model was not previously released due to the fact that up until recently the demand for a large size cabriolet was lacking. However the Ocean Drive convertible concept was a huge success, and therefore Mercedes decided that it will be the time to enter this segment.

The technical components are expected to be very similar with those used on the CL. Several V8 and V12 petrol engines will be available and also a completely new diesel. The top of the range will be as for the rest of the Mercedes vehicles, the AMG prepped versions. Rumors point that available will also be the 4Matic all wheel drive system.

BMW Executive Director Michael Ganal has told Germany’s Automobilwoche magazine that BMW wants to find further areas in which it can collaborate with Mercedes, beyond their current joint venture in hybrid vehicle technology. According to Ganal, the similarities in the two brands vehicles and markets make it natural for them to collaborate further. However, he declined to specify any of the potential areas of future cooperation that the company might be considering.

Though reticent to address it, the mention of similarities in the brands vehicles and market suggests that Ganal might be thinking of further extensions of alternate fuels technologies. Mercedes is expected to soon show a hybrid version of the S Class and BMW has displayed a hydrogen powered 7 Series and is reportedly putting it into a very limited experimental production run in the near future

Porsche has announced today that the company is no longer expected to attend the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. As part of the general reduction in trade-fair appearances which began two years ago, in favor of greater emphasis on direct contact with potential customers, motor show activities will in future be concentrated in the main sales areas of Porsche Cars North America (PCNA). Of the North American trade fairs in 2008, Porsche will among others be attending those in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Toronto.

As a successful supplier of sporty premium vehicles, Porsche is an exclusive niche manufacturer in the USA and Canada, just as it is elsewhere. Despite consistently achieving record sales figures, Porsche constantly strives to use its limited resources in the most efficient, customer-oriented manner possible. Of the 36,669 vehicles delivered to customers in North America by Porsche during its record 2005/06 fiscal year, over 20,000 were destined for the West and East Coasts. These results go to show that the restructuring of trade-fair activities was a strategic company decision that is bearing fruit.

The 2008 X-Type is built at Halewood, Liverpool and combines a a fresh performance spirit, handling agility and innovative technology with the luxury, craftsmanship and refinement for which Jaguar is renowned.

Porsche’s momentum in the sales race shows no sign of slowing, and with the introduction of all new models the once exclusive sports car brand is on the road to becoming mainstream. Current sales levels stand at roughly 100,000 units per year, double the number of cars Porsche sold just six years ago. The Detroit News reports that this figure may double again within the next six years.

Analysts from investment bank Morgan Stanley predict that Porsche will sell close to 200,000 cars by 2012, however, experts from auto consultancy firm CSM Worldwide are less optimistic but still see Porsche selling at least 150,000 cars per year by 2013.

With Europe’s largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen AG, under its control thanks to an increase in its stake to 31%, Porsche is in a prime situation to take advantage of VW’s substantial manufacturing, R&D and procurement capabilities. Professor Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, the managing director of another consultancy firm, B&D Forecast of Bochum, thinks that Porsche could eventually sell up to half a million vehicles by utilizing the resources of VW.

According to Morgan Stanley, the growth in Porsche’s sales will ride on the back of the release of several new models including the Panamera sedan in 2009, followed by a baby-Cayenne SUV in 2010 and a new coupe based on the Panamera in 2011.

Recently it was revealed that BMW had considered buying Volvo from Ford’s Premier Auto Group, and had gone so far as to order in a set of the Swede carmaker’s latest financial reports. Now it is reported that Ford has been in talks with Fiat Group over a possible sale of Jaguar and Land Rover.

The information comes from a source familiar with the talks who spoke recently with Automotive News. According to the source, Ford has hired investments banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to oversee the sale of the Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo brands but the talks which began with Fiat back in February have come been called off.

Fiat reportedly called off the talks because of fears of tarnishing its credit rating. Fiat was interested in Land Rover and its dealer network because the Italian carmaker still doesn’t have an SUV model within its five brands. The source also mentioned that the interest in Jaguar was for access to its rear-drive platforms and its V6 and V8 powertrains.

Ford CEO Allan Mullaly has previously stated that there are no immediate plans to sell anymore PAG brands, but explained that Ford is accessing all possibilities, however, the same thing was said about Aston Martin in the months prior to its sale.

Fiat’s upcoming 500 minicar may eventually be sold in the US with news that management is considering launching the sporty Abarth model Stateside by the end of the decade. A high-ranking official who spoke with Automotive News Europe revealed that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne hopes to sell the 135hp Abarth 500 in limited numbers to compete with BMW’s popular Mini Cooper but the car might not wear a Fiat badge.

The main priority is the re-launch of Alfa Romeo in the US, which is on track for a 2009 debut. The Fiat 500 would arrive a year later. “We cannot exclude that our new 500 would go, in some forms, to the US market, but not in the short term,” Marchionne explained at a recent press event.

The new 500 will officially go on sale in Europe next month, with the Abarth 500 expected to cost more than €15,000. At current exchange rates this equates roughly to $20,195, which is well above the $18,700 starting price for the Mini Cooper.

The two luxury marques have already seen some success by collaborating over the development of super-efficient diesel and hybrid technology, albeit with Volkswagen and General Motors lending a hand as well, but there could be more tie-ups in the future if BMW has its way. Execs in Munich are hoping to work closer with Mercedes-Benz in the future, according to BMW director Michael Ganal who spoke recently with Germany’s Automobilwoche.

It would be a logical choice, said Ganal, because both carmakers operate in the premium segment and both have a focus on building highly advanced cars with impeccable quality. Ganal also confirmed that BMW is not in any talks with Volvo and that there are no plans for the adoption of any other brand.

When questioned about what developments the two firms could undertake together, Ganal only mentioned that there are several possibilities but wasn’t willing to give any details. Over the next two decades, both companies will have to reaffirm their brand values for emerging markets such as China and India where often badge-cred is not enough to justify premium price tags.

It’s well document that China’s Chery Auto will be working closely with Chrysler for the development of a new Chinese built model to be sold in the US, but latest reports are suggesting that Chery might not be the only carmaker in bed with Chrysler. There’s also talk of Chery building a second model for Chrysler, which will be sold by the American automaker in emerging markets such as South America and Eastern Europe.

According to AutoWeek, Chrysler is expected to make an announcement very soon outlining its plans for a production version of the Hornet Concept car that was first displayed at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. The latest news is that Volkswagen AG and Mitsubishi will be involved in the car’s development, most likely to supply the project with a range of world-class powertrains.

The original concept car featured a supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 170hp, but the production car will likely be offered with both petrol and turbodiesel options. The car is expected to be unveiled at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but the official announcement should be made within the next month or two.

Bentley Brooklands has been unveiled at the Geneva Salon in March and since then it has captured the hearts of customers across the globe, with the first year’s production of this hand-assembled, luxury coupe already sold out. Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen, Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, said: "The interest in Brooklands since its unveiling in Geneva has exceeded our expectations. It is surely destined to become a collectors’ classic.

Bentley Brooklands is powered by a 6 ¾-litre V8 engine with an output of 530bhp (395kW) at 4000 rev/min and an astonishing 1050Nm (774lb ft) of torque at 3250 rev/min – the highest-ever torque of any V8 automotive engine in the world.

The new engine endows the Brookland’s with true supercar performance, accelerating to 60mph in just 5.0 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds) on its way to a top speed of 184mph ( 296 km/h). In-gear acceleration times are also greatly enhanced, with the coupe capable of accelerating from 50 to 70mph in 2.4 seconds (80-120km/h in 3.1 seconds).

The V8 engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with locking torque converter that provides an instantaneous response to the driver’s demands. A semi-automatic function allows manual gear selection for even greater driver control and, when driven to its potential, means stronger and faster acceleration in every gear.

The numbers are in and the Audi A6 topped the E Class Mercedes in registrations of new vehicles during the month – in Germany. The A6 got 35.9 percent of the market segment sales in the home land.

Audi has made it clear that they intend to be selling 1.5 million vehicles worldwide by 2015. While the company is actively pursuing market growth in China and India, it’s clear they aren’t neglecting the home market in the process.

These photos from a private blog appear to be clearer copies of pictures which surfaced about a week ago. Apparently, this is the almost production ready “Blue Devil” Corvette in testing at Nurburging. The car appears to be similar to the one photographed as it awaited shipping to Nurburging, but it isn’t the same car. That one had stock Corvette wheels and a painted top. Reportedly, Jan Magnussen is lapping the Ring faster in this car than in a production Z06 – as, no doubt, intended by Chevrolet.

Observers report the engine sound is consistent with earlier reports that the car is supercharged. The shroud over the hood, however, suggests that there will not be a hood scoop for this vehicle, but only a “power bulge” for additional clearance. An number of months ago, someone caught a photo of the supercharged engine apparently at the stage of final assembly at a Chevrolet engine shop. The supercharger clearly added height to the engine, so a power bulge to clear it would seem a necessity.

As noted in earlier reports, the top of this car is apparently carbon fiber.

Fiat is cosidering bringing a sporty version of the 500 minicar as a competitor for the Mini Cooper. It is also said that if it will come, it won’t wear the Fiat badge. Exports could begin sometime after 2010.

The new model, Abarth 500, will be the sporty version of the Fiat 500 and will have an output of 120 hp.

In Europe the Abarth 500 will be priced at 15.000 euro (or $20,195). The Mini Cooper is priced at $18,700.

"We cannot exclude our new 500 would go, in some forms, to the US market, but not shortly," Marchionne said recently at a press event for the Fiat Linea sedan.

Citroen will launch the sedan version of its midsized C4 in Europe, with the car expected to make its debut at the Barcelona’s Motor Show. The sedan has already been on sale in China as the Citroen C-Triomphe for several years now, where it’s manufactured in a partnership formed between the French carmaker and Chinese manufacturer Dongfeng. The sedan is also sold alongside the three-door hatch in Argentina and Brazil.

Based on the same platform as the hatch, the C4 sedan features extra legroom for rear passengers and is available with either a petrol or diesel four-cylinder engine. Overall length now measures 4.8m and the wheelbase stretches 2.71m.

Inside, the car features a unique air-freshener that allows the driver to change the smell of the interior. Another odd feature is the center of the steering wheel, which remains fixed even when the wheel is turned.

That Audi would be building the Q1, a small SUV competing with the Toyota RAV4 two-door, and based on the Steppenwolf concept car shown in 2000 is, if not old news, at least a long-standing rumor. In early April, the German magazine Sueddeutsche, reported that Audi was working on this vehicle.

Now another German magazine, Autobild, has published photos purporting to show what the expected appearance of the production Q1.

Building this car is part of a long-term brand strategy previously announced by Audi’s top management. In May, Audi’s general manager, Rupert Stadler, told the company’s annual shareholders meeting, that “Audi will be number one” by 2015. To achieve that goal, Audi expects to increase sales to more than a million vehicles per year by 2008, with a target of 1.5 million vehicles in 2015.

While sales at both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been flat this year, Stadler reported to the meeting that sales at Audi increased almost ten percent during the first quarter of this year. Audi is also making major commitments to both the Chinese market (where its sales increased 20% in the first quarter) and India, where it will build a new assembly plant next year.

The Q1 suggests that Audi intends to leave no market segment unfilled, and no market unsatisfied

Infiniti announced pricing on the 2008 Infiniti FX premium crossover sport utility vehicle, which goes on sale today at Infiniti retailers nationwide. The MSRP are as follows: $37,950 for the rear-wheel drive 3.5-liter V6-equipped FX35 2WD; $39,450 for the all-wheel drive 3.5-liter V6-equipped FX35 AWD; and $50,000 for the 4.5-liter V8-powered all-wheel drive FX45 AWD.

All the 2008 FX come standard with XMÒ satellite radio and body-colored satellite radio antenna. They come equipped with a standard leather-appointed interior, 300-watt BoseÒ audio system with 11 speakers, RearView Monitor and 5-speed automatic transmission.

The FX45 AWD is powered by a 4.5-liter DOHC V8 engine with an output of 320 hp. Infiniti FX45 option packages include the Run-Flat Tire Package, Technology Package, Infiniti Navigation System, Mobile Entertainment System and Sheer Platinum Metallic paint.

The 2008 FX35 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine with an output of 275 hp. It is offered in both all-wheel or rear-wheel drive. All FX models utilize a modified version of the advanced FM (Front Mid-ship) platform, enhanced for SUV duties. FX35 options include the Touring Package, Hands-Free Package, Sport Package, Run-Flat Tire Package, Technology Package, Mobile Entertainment System and Sheer Platinum Metallic paint (requires Sport Package).

Is not a secret anymore that the high production costs of the Golf Mark V have forced Volkswagen to speed up the development of the next Mark VI. And as the company says the new Golf will have an improved design, more equipment and better quality.

Featuring the traditional Golf design, with the chunky C-pillars set to continue, all the changes in the new Golf will be inspired by the forthcoming Tiguan SUV: new grille featuring a pair of distinctive horizontal bars, redesigned squared-off headlamps.

The Mark VI Golf will be built on the current platform, but will feature a less complicated multi-link rear suspension set-up. This move is to reduce production times, leading to big cost savings for the manufacturer during the build process.

Under the hood there will be the same engines from the current model, the only difference being a turbocharged 120bhp 1.4-litre motor that will replace the current 1.6 FSI petrol unit.

The new Golf will be unveiled next March at Geneva Motor Show, and will go on sale in autumn 2008.

Oups! Tom LaSorda, Chrysler’s CEO got upset after Consumer Reports made their evaluation over the Sebring and the Dodge Nitro. As he says the company underestimated its competitors, set standards too low in some areas and was not where it needed to be in areas such as fuel economy, interior quality, and limiting noise and vibration.

As a result of this “embarrassing misses” extremely aggressive actions are to be taken. In an interview with Detroit News, Chrysler’s product development chief, pointed out many actions being taken to improve Chryslers existing lineup and the new upcoming models.

The new Sebring was rated 16th out of 16 family sedans recently by Consumer Reports, a particularly tough segment with established cars like the Toyota.

Carbon fiber is usually used to build supercars that need to lower the weight to have better performance. It is usually a reach man’s material. But now we have very bad news from them: the price for this high-tech material is getting bigger: $20 a pound compared with as little as $5 a pound three or four years ago.

Carbon fiber supplier Zoltek has tripled capacity over the past year to service the growing market. "We’ve been able to raise prices significantly in a two-year time frame," CFO Kevin Schott says.

Saleen says the costs of the carbon fiber that it uses in the body of its $580,000 S7 supercar have more than doubled over the past year. It raised the 2007 price by $25,000 because of it.

The Shelby GT is set to return in 2008, and will amaze all the car lovers with a convertible version. The GT Convertible will be limited to 2100 units, in fact all the 2008 Shelby GT models will be limited to 2100 units.

It will be offered in Vista Blue with Metallic Silver stripes. It will be powered by the same 4.6 liter V8 engine used for the 2007 model that delivers 320 hp and will feature either manual or automatic transmission. It will be priced the same as the 2007 model.
